The Skills feature inside U HR Employee is the most under-celebrated screen in the entire 37-feature inventory. It looks modest on the surface — a list of competencies tied to the employee's current level, each row showing the skill name, the type, the target proficiency value, and the live mastery score. That simplicity is the point. Skills is the employee-facing window into U HR's competency model, and it is the only place where the abstract framework authored by HR in Skill Catalog meets the concrete reality of an individual worker's development. Every other module in the Skills cluster — Skill Catalog, Bulk Skill Import, Skill Mastery, Skill Approvals, Approval Management, Skills & Calibration — exists to feed or consume this screen. Without it, the rest of the cluster has no anchor in the employee experience.

What the Skills screen actually shows #

Open the Skills screen for any employee and you see five columns: the skill name (drawn from the Skill Catalog your HR team authored), the skill type (technical, behavioural, leadership, regulatory), the target value (the proficiency the employee must reach at their current level), the live mastery value (the most recent Skill Mastery assessment, with its date and reviewer), and the gap (the delta between target and current). Behind those five columns sit three U HR objects that make the data trustworthy rather than aspirational: Skill Catalog owns the canonical skill definitions and target values per level; Skill Mastery owns the assessment records with their reviewer signatures; and Skill Approvals owns the audit trail that proves every change to a mastery score was reviewed and accepted. The Skills screen does not invent any of these values — it renders them, and in doing so it forces the rest of the system to keep the data honest.

How Skills connects to the wider competency loop #

The Skills feature is the connective tissue of U HR's seven-feature competency cluster. Skill Catalog is where HR authors the canonical skills and their target values per Level Definition; the Skills screen renders the slice of that catalog relevant to each employee based on their assigned level and position. Skill Mastery is where assessors record proficiency values; the Skills screen displays those values alongside the targets so the gap is visible. Skill Approvals is where every change to a mastery score is reviewed and accepted; the Skills screen exposes the reviewer and the approval status, so the employee can see whether a recorded competency is provisional or confirmed. Approval Management is the engine that routes those approvals to the right reviewer; Skills surfaces the result. Skills & Calibration is where group-level HR calibrates assessments across companies and departments; Skills displays the calibrated values. The Bulk Skill Import feature lets HR seed the initial skills matrix from a spreadsheet — Skills renders the imported data the moment the import completes. None of these features stands alone; the Skills screen is where they all become visible to the employee.

Why target values per level matter #

The target value column is what turns Skills from a static inventory into a development instrument. When HR authors a skill in the Skill Catalog, they do not just give it a name and a type — they assign a target proficiency for every Level Definition in the level framework. A junior engineer might have a target of 2 out of 5 on "structural load analysis"; a senior engineer has a target of 4; a lead engineer has a target of 5. When the employee opens the Skills screen, the system shows only the target for their current level — not the full ladder. This is a deliberate design choice: the employee sees the immediate bar they must clear, not the entire staircase, which keeps the development conversation focused on the next step rather than the distant peak. When the employee is promoted, the target values refresh automatically to the new level's bar, and the gap calculation re-runs against the new targets — surfacing the next set of competencies to close.

A practical scenario: a 900-staff facilities-management company #

Consider a Jeddah-based facilities-management company with 900 employees spread across cleaning, HVAC maintenance, security, and landscaping crews. The HR team authors a Skill Catalog with 47 competencies — 18 technical (HVAC fault diagnosis, scaffold inspection, chemical handling), 12 behavioural (customer interaction, conflict de-escalation), 9 regulatory (GOSI onboarding, Saudi Labour Law basics, OSHA-equivalent safety), and 8 leadership (crew supervision, shift handover). Each skill has a target value for each of the five Levels in the level framework. The Skills screen renders a different slice of that catalog to every employee: a cleaning crew member sees 12 of the 47 skills with targets calibrated to Level 1; an HVAC technician sees 19 skills with targets calibrated to Level 3; a crew supervisor sees 24 skills including the leadership set. When the HVAC technician completes a manufacturer training course, the assessor records a Skill Mastery update — and the Skills screen for that technician refreshes the next time they log in, showing the new mastery value, the recalculated gap, and the reviewer signature that confirms the assessment is approved.

Why this design beats a custom spreadsheet #

Most Saudi HR teams who try to track competencies end up with a shared Excel workbook: one tab per department, one row per employee, one column per skill, with target values hardcoded into column headers and mastery values entered by hand. The workbook works for the first quarter and then decays. Targets drift because nobody updates the headers when a level is renamed. Mastery values go stale because the assessor forgets to log the update. Reviewer signatures disappear because Excel has no audit trail. The Skills feature solves all three failure modes at the data layer: targets live in Skill Catalog and refresh on the screen whenever the catalog changes; mastery values live in Skill Mastery and refresh on the screen whenever an approved assessment lands; reviewer signatures live in Skill Approvals and travel with the mastery record forever.
