Educational campuses are the most heterogeneous EHS environments that exist at their scale: chemistry laboratories beside cafeterias, machine workshops beside playgrounds, dormitories beside boiler rooms — all populated by minors (K-12) or young adults living independently for the first time (universities). The safety program inherits this heterogeneity: it cannot be a single checklist, but a family of inspection routes and incident taxonomies per zone, unified under one reporting spine.
Zone-based inspection architecture #
- Laboratories: chemical inventory, fume hood function, waste segregation — the highest-consequence zone on any campus
- Sports and playgrounds: surface condition, equipment integrity, supervision coverage during peak use
- Kitchens and cafeterias: food safety at institutional scale — the zone regulators inspect first
- Workshops and vocational spaces: machine guarding and the inductions that gate access to equipment

A campus incident triggers more audiences than an industrial one: parents who need facts fast, education authorities who need notifications in defined formats, insurers who need the timeline, and — for the long tail — the institution's own reputation. An incident system that produces these outputs from one record, with GPS-stamped inspection history behind it, is the difference between a managed event and a semester of damage control.
Universities add the research dimension: PIs own their laboratories like small businesses, and central EHS needs visibility without owning every decision. The workable pattern is distributed inspection with centralized analytics — each lab runs its checklist, the safety office sees completion and findings across all of them, and violations age visibly until the dean's office notices the ones that persist.
