Groups are simple until they're twenty, and then they're an administration system. This tutorial covers the mechanics — creating groups, assigning content, setting schedules — and the conventions that keep a group structure legible after it grows.

Creating a group #

  • Open Courses → Groups and create the group with a convention-friendly name: level-term or client-program
  • Add students manually, via CSV import, or automatically through enrollment rules
  • Scope content: check which lessons, PDFs and quizzes the group can see — unchecked items are invisible, not locked
  • Set the drip schedule if the group progresses on a calendar: week-by-week unlocks
  • Optionally assign a group instructor or TA with the right role scope

Invisible vs. locked — the detail that matters #

When you scope content away from a group, Ukkera makes it invisible rather than showing a locked teaser. This is deliberate: locked content generates support tickets ('why can't I open module 7?') and price resentment; invisible content keeps each group's experience clean and complete on its own terms. Premium groups aren't advertised to standard groups — they simply live in a different room.

The four patterns worth copying #

The cohort pattern (same content, calendar schedule) for live-feeling courses; the tier pattern (overlapping content, different depth) for monetization; the client pattern (branded subset per organization) for B2B; and the level pattern (placement-based routing) for schools. Every complicated group structure is some combination of these four — resist inventing a fifth until you've exhausted the classics.
