Flash cards fail in video courses for one boring reason: the answer is one glance away, and glancing is cheaper than thinking. Designing cards worth the lock #

A lock on a badly written card is just friction with extra steps. Cards that work under this pattern ask one thing, answer in under ten words, and mirror the exact phrasing the video used — the moment a card introduces new vocabulary the lecture did not, the student is punished for the card writer's inconsistency, not their own inattention. The best-performing cards are consequence-shaped: "What happens to the encrypted file when the expiry date passes?" outperforms "Define download expiry," because consequences are how practitioners actually store knowledge. Attach two or three cards per lecture, not twenty; the lock should create a rhythm of check-ins, not a wall of interrogation between the student and the next video.

For students, the practical takeaway is simpler: study tools that let you peek are measuring your honesty, not building your memory. Choose the tool that makes the peek impossible and you will resent it for a week and thank it after the exam. For instructors, the takeaway is that the small feature you never configured — the one that locks an answer behind genuine engagement — is often the highest-leverage retention decision available without touching your content at all.
