Ask any course platform about offline support and you'll get a confident yes. Ask what actually lands on the student's device and the answers diverge into three architectures — and only one of them protects your content while serving your students. Understanding the difference is the whole comparison.
Architecture 1 — Raw downloads #
The most common approach: a download button that saves the actual MP4 to the student's gallery. Genuine offline access, zero additional engineering — and zero protection. The file can be shared, re-uploaded, bundled into piracy packages and converted at will. Platforms in this category have effectively decided that piracy leakage is an acceptable cost of convenience, which is a defensible business decision for them and a catastrophic one for you.
Architecture 2 — App-locked streaming caches #
A middle tier: video caches inside a proprietary app, playable offline but not exportable. Better than raw downloads — casual sharing stops at the app wall — but the protection has edges: screen recording still works, OS-level capture tools bypass the lock entirely, and desktop playback often falls back to browser streaming where the old rules apply. Adequate for hobby content; porous for proprietary training material worth stealing.
Architecture 3 — Encrypted playback (Ukkera's approach) #
- Content encrypted at the packaging layer — no raw file ever exists on the device
- Playback only inside the secure player, with screen-capture blocking at the application level
- Device binding: each enrollment authorizes a bounded set of devices
- The full interactive experience works offline — quizzes, timestamped notes, split view
- Access expiry follows enrollment terms automatically
The student experience across all three is identical: tap, watch, learn — offline. The instructor experience is not. Architecture one leaks your library, architecture two leaks it slowly, architecture three keeps it yours while giving students in planes, rural areas and dead zones the same full course. When platforms market 'offline', ask which architecture they mean; the answer prices your content's future.
