Attendance tracking seems trivial until you multiply it: five minutes per session, several sessions per day, across an institution — the choice of method quietly costs or saves thousands of teaching hours per year, and determines whether your attendance data can survive an audit. 5. Roll call — the ritual #

Universally understood, zero technology, and a disaster at any scale: consumes 5–10 minutes of every session, feeds disputes from misheard names, and produces a paper record nobody trusts. Its only surviving virtue is the teacher's glance around the room — which, ironically, is exactly what QR preserves without the roll.

4. Sign-in sheets — the forgery economy #

Faster than roll call and creates a paper trail — one that generations of students have generously democratized by signing for absent friends. Studies of signature-based systems routinely find meaningful proxy-signing rates; the sheet measures penmanship loyalty, not presence. Transcription into any digital system arrives late and error-prone.

3. Biometrics — accurate and heavy #

Fingerprints and face recognition deliver near-perfect identity verification — at the cost of hardware per door, enrollment ceremonies, hygiene complaints, and a privacy posture that attracts regulatory attention wherever minors or biometric laws are involved. For attendance (not security), the accuracy is overkill and the liability is real.

2. RFID cards — the lost-card problem #

Tap-in cards are fast and integrate with door access — but they verify the card, not the student. Card lending is casual, card loss is constant, and replacement costs recur forever. The infrastructure (readers, cards, management system) makes it a budget line rather than a feature flip.

  • Speed: a 300-student lecture checks in during the walk to their seats
  • Cost: zero hardware — screens you own, phones they own
