Students routinely prepare for open-book exams as if they were closed-book with a safety net — memorize anyway, plan to look things up. The result is the worst of both worlds: slow lookups during the exam, and no reliable memory either. The two formats test different constructs, and the preparation should diverge from week one.
Closed-book: build retrieval, ruthlessly #
For closed-book exams, everything reduces to retrieval practice under time pressure: blank-page reconstruction, spaced cycles, and full-length past papers written in exam conditions. Formula sheets you must reproduce from memory get their own drill — write them cold at the start of every practice session until they are automatic.
Open-book: build the search system, then rehearse search #
- One master index per course: every formula, definition, and worked example tagged by topic and page
- Tabs, not bookmarks: physical or digital tabs you can hit without reading the table of contents
- Annotation notes in the margins: where the tricky variants live, which example matches which question type
- Timed rehearsals with the system — a lookup that takes 90 seconds in practice takes 3 minutes in the room
The exam-day difference is philosophical: closed-book rewards depth of memory, open-book rewards speed of deployment. In an open-book exam, the students who finish are the ones who prepared an answer architecture — knowing what exists and where — rather than re-deriving under pressure. Paradoxically, the best open-book preparation still includes some memorization of the core skeleton, because knowing what to look for is itself memory work.
