A practice exam is only as useful as its aim: twenty random questions on 'everything' measure nothing. This tutorial shows how to build targeted practice in five minutes — scoped, typed and scheduled so every session produces a specific signal about a specific weakness.
Step 1 — Scope: one lesson, one purpose #
In the exam generator, select the exact lesson or PDF section you just studied — not the whole course. Choose your purpose: 'check comprehension' (easier, concept-focused) or 'exam rehearsal' (harder, mixed). Ten to fifteen questions is the sweet spot: long enough to be a measurement, short enough that you'll actually take it tonight.
Step 2 — Mix the question types deliberately #
- Multiple choice for coverage — fast, broad, low-friction retrieval
- Short answer for honest recall — no options to lean on
- Scenario/application questions for the transfer skill exams actually reward
- True/false for speed drills on definitions and properties
Step 3 — Take it cold and read the telemetry #
Take the exam without notes, immediately after studying — the 'cold' timing is what makes it a measurement. Then read your results like a diagnostic report: which question types failed (format problem), which topics failed (study problem), which were silly errors (attention problem). The three failure modes have three different fixes, and knowing which one you have is worth more than the score itself.
Step 4 — Schedule the retake before closing #
Before you close the tab, add the retake to your to-do list: same scope, two or three days later. Spacing converts a single measurement into a retention curve — the second attempt's score tells you whether your fix worked. Students who retake with spacing typically reach 90%+ on the second pass, and that number, not the first attempt's 60%, is what walks into the exam room.
