Every STEM instructor knows the failure mode: you share a full-screen video derivation, students switch to the PDF diagram, and by the time they return they have lost the thread of the proof. Working memory holds roughly four chunks of information — forcing students to hold a diagram in their head while reading a separate wall of text guarantees cognitive overload. Split view solves the geometry of the problem: the lecture and the artifact live on one screen, permanently visible to each other.

Where split view earns its keep #

  • Circuit analysis: schematic on the left, step-by-step nodal derivation on the right, no window juggling
  • Anatomy and biology: labeled plate beside the narration of structures and pathologies
  • Engineering drawing: dimensioned blueprint beside the tolerance and GD&T explanation
  • Statistics: dataset or plot beside the formula being applied to it

The effect compounds for recorded content. In a live class an instructor can notice confusion and switch views; a recording cannot. Students replaying a lecture at midnight need the layout to do the attention management for them — diagram pinned, explanation flowing, zero friction between the two.

A session pattern that works #

Start with the diagram alone and let students predict what will happen — this activates prior knowledge. Then run the explanation beside it, pausing at each transform of the figure. Close with a quiz attached to the exact diagram state students just studied. The prediction–explanation–retrieval cycle respects how technical material is actually internalized, and every element of it happens on one screen.
